Police are investigating a suspicious overnight fire that destroyed a portable at Sa-Hali Secondary. Crews were called to Arrowstone Drive shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday and found the classroom fully involved, but kept the fire from reaching the main school. The RCMP’s General Investigative Support Team has joined fire investigators on the case and is asking anyone with information to come forward. (Radio NL)
A new wildfire is burning out of control near Paul Lake, about 15 km northeast of Kamloops. The BC Wildfire Service was first alerted Wednesday and pegged the blaze at roughly five hectares. An initial attack crew, a response officer, two helicopters and airtankers are responding, fire information officer Shae Stearns said. BCWS believes the fire is human-caused. (Castanet)
Sun Peaks came within a hair of its all-time skier-visit record this winter, even with patchy snow. Opening day slipped back a week in November; a strong second half of December rescued the busy season; and grooming crews got creative through a dry January-February stretch. Avola and Blue River residents will vote June 13 on whether to fold Thompson Headwaters into the TNRD’s mosquito-control program. The referendum covers roughly 180 properties across Electoral Area “B.” A 2021 petition attempt to add Blue River to the program failed. (Castanet)
