Monday, May 25 is more useful than dramatic: Kamloops landed another national sports event, Riverside Park’s World Cup setup is turning into a real summer program, and rural FireSmart chipping is starting right as the forecast stays unsettled.

Kamloops landed another national tournament. CFJC reports Canada Soccer has picked the Tournament Capital to host the 2027 Futsal Canadian Championship in April 2027. Games will run on two full-size courts at the Tournament Capital Centre, with the men’s and women’s finals scheduled for April 11. (CFJC Today)

Free FireSmart chipping is opening up for rural communities. Castanet reports the TNRD is offering free chipping days through mid-July to help residents clear brush, branches, deadfall and trimmings that can add wildfire risk around properties. Upcoming stops include Big Bar, Brookmere, Spences Bridge, Lac Le Jeune, Walloper Lake, Heffley Lake, Knutsford, Rivershore, Knouff Lake and Loon Lake. (Castanet)

Riverside Park is getting more than one World Cup watch party. Castanet reports the City’s June 18 Canada Celebrates event will show Canada vs. Qatar on a large LED screen, with cultural and music performances, mini soccer pitches, food vendors and local soccer programming. The City also plans Riverside Park watch parties for every World Cup match from June 11 to July 19. (Castanet)


🚨 Safety

The North Thompson River crash story has a survivor’s account. Castanet reports the woman rescued from the river says she is grateful to be alive while loved ones continue hoping the body of driver Benina Jepkoech can be recovered. The car has not been located in the high water. (Castanet)

Charges have been laid after an alleged attack near Cherry Creek. Castanet reports Jerid Karl Ure, 43, is facing assault with a weapon and mischief charges after a woman told police she was struck with a small propane canister outside a rural home near Kamloops. He is due back in court June 5. (Castanet)

Chase RCMP are investigating a rural break-in. CFJC reports suspects cut the gate lock at a Loakin-Bear Creek Road property, broke into a home and outbuildings around 12:30 a.m. Monday, May 11, and stole two recreational vehicles and other items. (CFJC Today)
