The remains of Stan Cappis have been found two years after he was swept into the Thompson River. Cappis entered the river near Tournament Capital Ranch in July 2024 to help two children caught in the current. The children and another rescuer reached shore, but Cappis did not. Kamloops RCMP confirmed his identification and called him a hero. (KamloopsBCNow)
Six TRU research projects have received nearly $595,000 in federal funding. The work covers the gig economy, migrant care workers, wildfire re-entry, outdoor recreation, HIV stigma and community resilience. One project will study how B.C. communities can improve the return home after wildfire evacuations. (TRU)
Kamloops is hosting more than 180 sporting events this year, and demand still exceeds capacity. The City’s events supervisor says tournament requests remain strong even as Kelowna expands its own sports calendar. Fifty-five temporary supported homes are opening at 1449 McGill Road. CMHA Kamloops will operate the modular building with at least three staff on site around the clock, daily meals and connections to health and community services. Wildfire damage has been confirmed on about 20 properties northwest of Clinton. The TNRD says impacts from the Fiftynine Creek fire range from melted siding to the loss of every structure on some properties. The fire was estimated at 10,864 hectares Thursday, with 193 properties under evacuation order and the Village of Clinton on alert. (Castanet)
Kamloops remained second among Canada’s 41 census metropolitan areas for crime severity in 2025, although the index fell for a second year. The overall severity score dropped to 126.2 from 129.9 in 2024. Violent crime severity rose about three per cent, while the non-violent measure fell roughly seven per cent.
