Smoke and ash from wildfires can cause the brief light flickers being reported around Kamloops. BC Hydro says airborne particles can create temporary faults near power lines, prompting protective equipment to isolate the problem and restore service within seconds or minutes. A proposed 50 per cent U.S. tariff on some Canadian wood products could put more pressure on B.C. mills. Kamloops-North Thompson MLA and forestry critic Ward Stamer says the measure, scheduled for August 19, could push struggling operations toward closure, although he expects negotiations may change the final rate. The Village of Clinton has been evacuated as the Big Bar wildfire complex grows. By Friday evening, TNRD orders covered about 280 addressed properties, including 87 newly ordered to leave around Big Bar, Jesmond and Chasm Road. Fire crews reported aggressive behaviour on the Fiftynine Creek fire and were pulled back to safe areas before reassessing. (Castanet)
