A new $5,000 bursary is helping a Kamloops student in recovery continue his education. Local dentist Dr. Ho-Young Chung funded the award through Day One Society for students in advanced programs. Its first recipient, Elijah, is pursuing a master’s degree in counselling psychology at UNBC after nearly five years in recovery. Day One has offered its separate Out of the Ashes bursaries since 2009, and Chung hopes to keep supporting the new award. (Castanet)

🚨 Safety

Crews responded Saturday to a small wildfire about 16 kilometres northwest of Sun Peaks. The roughly 0.3-hectare fire was burning in grass east of Little Knouff Lake, between Louis Creek and Heffley-Louis Creek Road. An initial-attack crew and helicopter were working the fire while Sun Peaks Fire Rescue monitored it; the cause remained under investigation. (Castanet)

RCMP are investigating a possible fatality in the Bald Range wildfire west of Summerland. A Meadow Valley resident reported the possible death, but police and the BC Coroners Service had not confirmed it because hazardous conditions were limiting access. The large Okanagan fire has forced thousands of people to evacuate, adding another reason to check conditions before travelling south. (CFJC Today)

Avoid unnecessary travel near active wildfires and leave response routes clear. Road Safety at Work says smoke, closures and evacuation orders can turn routine trips hazardous. Drivers who must travel should check current conditions, keep headlights and tail lights on, increase following distance, carry an emergency kit and follow directions from emergency personnel.
