TRU hosted its largest-ever group of international Mitacs research students this summer. Thirty visiting students spent about 12 weeks working with faculty on applied projects spanning engineering, mathematics and the social sciences. Projects included a vision-and-AI memory assistant for people with dementia, a Braille learning system and autonomous robotics research. More than 60 young entrepreneurs will open 34 lemonade stands around Kamloops Friday. Community Futures Thompson Country’s second annual Lemonade Day teaches children to plan, market and operate a small business, including customer service and financial literacy. Last year’s top participant earned $824 in one day. (Castanet)
A cat evacuated from Clinton gave birth to five healthy kittens after volunteers discovered she was pregnant. Reba arrived in Kamloops with her owner July 24 during the Pear Lake wildfire evacuation and delivered the litter August 5 with veterinary support. Her owner plans to keep one kitten, another has found a home and the remaining kittens will be available for adoption later this summer. Local animal-welfare groups are collectively caring for nearly 200 pets and livestock displaced by wildfires. (Castanet)
🏛️ What Changed
Canada Post has resumed mail and parcel delivery in Clinton after nearly four weeks. Service stopped when the village was evacuated July 24 because of the Pear Lake wildfire. Delivery has restarted as residents return under an evacuation alert, but Canada Post says interruptions and delays remain possible. (CFJC Today)
The TNRD will reduce fees and prioritize permits for residents rebuilding wildfire-damaged homes. The regional district will waive charges for building-information documents, discount building permits and cut wildfire-related variance or development-permit fees in half. Rebuilds will move to the front of the processing queue, and partially damaged structures can be removed without demolition permits. Provincial building-code, riparian and Agricultural Land Reserve requirements still apply, and some properties may need geotechnical assessments. (Castanet)
🚨 Safety
Extreme heat, low humidity, gusty winds and possible dry lightning could sharply increase wildfire activity Friday and Saturday. The TNRD says 2,361 properties remain on evacuation alert because of the Ainslie Creek, Pear Lake, French Bar Creek and Riley Creek fires. Another 208 properties remain under evacuation order across three of those incidents. Residents on alert are being told to stay ready to leave quickly, and officials do not expect to lift more alerts before the weather system passes. (Castanet)
Crews contained four spot fires that crossed Maka Creek on the Ainslie Creek fire’s eastern flank. BC Wildfire Service says the fire did not continue spreading east of the creek. A 700-hectare ignition northeast of Alexandra Bridge also brought the fire down to a prepared guard, but crossover conditions—when temperature exceeds relative humidity—could produce aggressive behaviour before wind and thunderstorms arrive.
