☕ Good Morning

A quick note about the future of Kamloops Digest. For anyone I haven’t met, my name is Isaac Audet. I run Trim Automation, a local business that helps companies with software and technology, and I’ve been the person behind the Digest.

I’ve loved building this, and the feedback has been nothing but good! I’m going to be travelling and won’t have enough time to keep giving it the attention it needs, so I’m looking for the right new owner to keep it going.

That would include the newsletter, website, events directory, brand, audience and the systems behind it. I’ll also make sure there’s a proper handover.

Nothing is changing right away. If you might be interested in becoming the next owner, or know someone who would be a good fit, reply to this email and tell me a little about yourself.

📰 News

Kamloops Airport has received nearly $1.35 million toward an upgrade of its airfield electrical infrastructure. The federal funding will cover half of the eligible project cost and help pay for a new field electrical centre, a standalone electrical system and standby power. The work is intended to replace aging equipment that supports airfield lighting and other essential operations. Construction is expected to begin this year and finish in 2027. (Castanet)

Cooler weather is helping crews at the Pear Lake wildfire, but little rain reached the 165,928-hectare fire Sunday. BC Wildfire Service says aerial infrared scans are being used to find hot spots along the fire’s edges. Smoke may remain visible as isolated fuel pockets burn inside the perimeter, and significant work continues near Robertson Creek and Allen Creek. (Castanet)

Rain is lowering fire behaviour at the Ainslie Creek wildfire in the short term. BC Wildfire Service says different parts of the fire received six to 14 millimetres of rain over the previous 24 hours. Crews are strengthening containment lines on the northeast flank and dousing hot spots along Maka Creek, although activity inside the perimeter is expected to continue until winter because of extreme drought conditions. Crown prosecutors will explain the community-court model to Kamloops council Tuesday. The model can pair a consistent judge and prosecutor with service agencies to address factors connected to repeat offending. Kamloops has advocated for a community court for years, but the province has not approved one here. (Castanet)

🏛️ What Changed

A long-term forest plan for the Thompson River watershed has moved into its development stage. The province and First Nations from the Secwépemc, Nlaka’pamux, Syilx and St’át’imc Nations will use technical information, Indigenous knowledge and feedback from this summer’s public engagement to prepare a draft. The plan is intended to guide future decisions on wildfire risk, watershed health, biodiversity, old growth, climate change and timber supply. (Castanet)

Another section of the regional rail trail has opened. Trail counters have logged more than 26,000 users on the upper Sicamous-Mara Lake section and more than 24,000 on the middle section through Enderby this year. Another two kilometres south of Enderby are expected to open this fall, while erosion work will temporarily close part of the Mara Lake section in September. (CFJC Today)

☀️ Monday is forecast to be sunny with a high near 27°C. The latest AQHI reading was 2.25, in the low-risk range. Tuesday should bring a mix of sun and cloud with a high near 28°C.

Highway 5A maintenance continues between Kamloops and Merritt. Single-lane alternating traffic is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until September 11.
