Sníne Elementary will welcome students Tuesday as SD73’s first new school in more than 20 years. The Pineview Valley school has room for more than 450 students and is expected to open with over 300 enrolled. Its catchment was drawn to help relieve severe space pressure at south shore elementary schools. The $53-million building includes outdoor learning areas, Indigenous gardens and a learning commons. Kamloops residents used 21 per cent less water while Level 4 drought restrictions were in place. The measures lasted nearly seven weeks and have now eased after recent rain and cooler temperatures lowered the provincial drought rating for the South Thompson basin. The TNRD is seeking $95,000 from the province to clear wildfire debris from about 30 properties. The request focuses on damage from the Pear Lake wildfire, particularly around Clinton. Regional officials say ranches have lost fencing and haystacks along with damage to homes and other structures. The final evacuation orders in the regional district were lifted Thursday, although 294 properties remain on alert in areas affected by the Ainslie Creek, French Bar and Pear Lake fires. (Castanet)

Former councillor Ray Dhaliwal has joined the Kamloops mayoral race and pledged to take a pay cut if elected. The local business owner is the fourth declared contender for the mayor’s chair. 🏛️ What Changed

Construction begins Tuesday on a 600-metre multi-use path along Tranquille Road. The extension will connect Fulton Field Park with Airport Road on the west side of Tranquille, adding lighting, trees and landscaping for a safer walking and cycling route. Site preparation and utility work will continue through September and October, with paving planned for late October and completion expected in early November. Drivers should expect some noise, dust and delays where the project overlaps with Tranquille Phase 3 work. (City of Kamloops)

City recycling trucks are temporarily taking collected material to the South Thompson Eco-Depot in Pritchard. Recycle BC directed the change after Wednesday’s suspicious fire affected the Emterra Environmental facility in Valleyview. The City says the resulting disruption to recycling service should be short-lived. (CFJC Today)

The emergency department at Lillooet Hospital will be closed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Other inpatient services remain available, but patients needing emergency care may be directed to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, about two hours away.
