📰 News

More than 250 people came together in Clinton for the community’s first large gathering since residents returned after the Pear Lake wildfire. Saturday’s Clinton Strong rally raised money for the Clinton Wildfire Recovery Fund, which will be administered through the local food bank. Mayor Roland Stanke said organizers ran out of food at the breakfast as residents reconnected and looked toward the long recovery ahead. (CFJC Today)

B.C. and Alberta cattle groups are working together to help producers facing feed shortages and wildfire damage. The program will connect B.C. livestock operations with Alberta producers that have feed, pasture or room to take cattle. The B.C. Cattlemen’s Association says the arrangement cannot replace what was lost, but could give affected ranchers more options during a difficult year. (CFJC Today)

TRU’s Disaster Relief Fund is providing emergency financial help to students affected by wildfires, floods and other crises. The university says evacuation, displacement, property damage and unexpected costs can make it difficult for students to continue their education. TRU is inviting community donations to keep the fund available when students need immediate support. (Castanet)

Former clients of A New Tomorrow say stigma can make it harder for people with addictions to seek help. Participants in the Kamloops recovery program described feeling judged or unworthy of support while using substances. Their comments come as street disorder, mental health and addictions are expected to become prominent issues in the municipal election campaign. (CFJC Today)

Three Kamloops organizations are joining forces for an October fundraiser. Wings Above Kamloops, the Kamloops Firefighters Charitable Society and volunteer search-and-recovery group SRD K9s will hold a Saturday Night Social on October 3. The event includes the launch of the firefighters’ annual calendar, with proceeds supporting all three organizations. (Castanet)

🏛️ What Changed

Merritt is developing a community resilience framework based partly on lessons from the 2021 flood. The City says the plan will bring together earlier research and planning so local businesses, service organizations and community partners can better prepare for sudden emergencies and longer-term pressures. Merritt also expects the framework to support future partnerships and grant applications. (CFJC Today)
